Dollar Spot

On close mown turf this disease is usually seen as very small spots approximately 10-20mm in diameter.

These patches are very distinct and often circular, although they may link together to form large affected patches. Within the patches the dead grass is usually dry, bleached white or straw coloured.

In many instances a dark band cuts off the shrunken bleached region from the remaining green portion.

As with most turf diseases it is caused by a fungus which is encouraged by compacted soil and a high pH. It is particularly prevalent in damp, mild weather.

This disease is fairly uncommon in the UK, and normally only affects fescue grasses.

To combat the disease improve the condition of the soil by aerating the lawn. Then remove the thatch by raking it out in early autumn. Feed with a nitrogen-rich fertiliser in the spring.
